Peter Mullan began his film career as an actor, appearing in films such as Riff-Raff, Braveheart, Trainspotting and My Name is Joe, directed by Ken Loach, for which he won Best Actor at Cannes Film Festival in 1998. He went on to appear in Miss Julie, receiving his second BIFA nomination for Best Actor. Peter is also an award winning writer and director. His films include Orphans and The Magdalene Sisters, for which won the European Union Media Prize, the ALFS award for Best British Director and the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for, amongst others, a Cesar award, the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film at the BAFTAs and the Best Screenplay BAFTA. 

Peter Mullan was a BIFA jury member in 2009.
