The 2009 Jury Chair

Producer

Dixie Linder started her career at Working Title Films before joining Sarah Radclyffe’s SRP in 1993, where she produced BENT starring Clive Owen and the multi award-winning THE WAR ZONE directed by Tim Roth and starring Ray Winstone. She went on to produce THE MARTINS starring Kathy Burke and Lee Evans. She has produced various projects for Sam Taylor Wood, including Elton John’s video I WANT LOVE starring Robert Downey Jnr. She joined Little Bird in 2002 where she co-produced amongst others IN MY FATHER'S DEN, which has garnered numerous awards, CHURCHILL THE HOLLYWOOD YEARS staring Christian Slater and was the Production Executive on TRAUMA starring Colin Firth. She recently produced the short film KING BASTARD for award winning theatre director Rufus Norris starring Peter Mullan. She is now a freelance producer and is currently developing scripts with Iain Softley, Rufus Norris and David Morrissey.

The 2009 Jury

Director

Eran Creevy’s directing career began on pop promos for the likes of Ashley Walters and Audio Bullies, culminating in him winning an MVA in 2008. In the same year, his feature debut, Shifty, was released through Between The Eyes, a production company at which he is a partner. This was received to high acclaim, earning him a nomination for The Douglas Hickox Award at last year’s BIFAs. Eran is currently developing his new feature Welcome to the Punch.

Head of Distribution & Exhibition
UK Film Council

Peter Buckingham is Head of Distribution & Exhibition at the UK Film Council. His role is to ensure that audiences across the UK have access to a diverse range of films whilst ensuring that audience admissions across this broadened landscape continues to rise. He heads up a range of schemes to support this strategy including the P&A Fund (prints & advertising) and the world’s first 2k Digital Screen Network. He is also currently on a number of advisory boards including Cass Business School in London. 

Producer

Adrian Sturges is the producer of The Escapist, the debut feature of Rupert Wyatt, which won the 2007 British Independent Film Award for Best Achievement in Production. Adrian has a strong track record of working with first time feature directors who are graduating from short films. He is currently in production with Albatross the directorial debut of Niall MacCormick and has recently completed post production on J Blakeson’s debut feature The Disappearance of Alice Creed, which received an honourable mention for Best Newcomer at the London Film Festival.  

Actor

With an extensive list of credits to his name, Liam Cunningham has earned his ever growing following on both sides of the Atlantic. He has consistently balanced smaller productions in his native Ireland with much larger scale films. Amongst these, he co-starred in the multi-award winning The Wind that Shakes the Barley and was nominated for a number of Best Supporting Actor awards, including a BIFA, for his performance as Father Moran in last year’s Hunger. Most recently, he starred in British crime thriller Harry Brown alongside Michael Caine and Emily Mortimer. 

Actor

Since first appearing on our screens in the early nineties, Eddie Marsan has quietly established himself as one of this country’s premier supporting actors. With roles as diverse as his talent, he is a veteran of film, television and theatre. In 2004 he won a BIFA for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Vera Drake, a triumph he repeated in 2008 for his portrayal of a psychologically unhinged driving instructor in the multi-award winning, Happy Go Lucky. Most recently, he was seen in the acclaimed BBC series Conviction, and co-stars in the upcoming Sherlock Holmes. 

Actor

Idris Elba started his career in his native London where he became a mainstay on British television in shows such as Dangerfield and Ultraviolet. Now best known for his role as Stringer Bell in gritty US television series, The Wire, Elba has built on his first leading role in the feature, Sometimes In April, with a string of highly acclaimed films including American Gangster and RocknRolla. This year, Idris has been filming throughout the world, from California to Glasgow, and is currently in London working on the psychological crime drama, Luther, for the BBC. 

Documentary Filmmaker

Kate Blewett is a documentary filmmaker who investigates situations around the world where men, women and children are hidden away suffering abuse, neglect or exploitation. The winner of numerous awards, including a BAFTA, 6 EMMY's, US Peabody's, Royal Television Society, Broadcast, Prix Italia, Monte Carlo UNESCO Special Jury and the Robert F. Kennedy award, as a Producer/Director, often undercover, she highlights issues and campaigns for the changes needed. 

Production Designer

Kave Quinn studied Fashion at St Martins and after an initial foray into the costume department moved over to design. In 1993 she joined forces with Danny Boyle, Andrew MacDonald, John Hodge and Director of Photography Brian Tufano to collaborate on Shallow Grave. She went on to work with the same team on Trainspotting and A Life less Ordinary. Her other film credits include Layer Cake, Is Anybody there?, Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel and Harry Brown.  

Actor / Director / Writer

Nick Moran studied at Mountview Drama School, working as an actor in episodic T.V and theatre for years before his breakthrough lead role in Guy Richie's debut feature Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. Since then he has starred in over 20 feature films, receiving 7 BIFA nominations and two wins. His most recent nomination was for his directorial debut Telstar, last year. He has also worked as producer and writer on three films, and his next feature as writer/director, The Kid, which is based on Kevin Lewis' bestseller, will open in spring of 2010. 

Projectionist
Soho Screening Rooms

Paul Speed never looked back after Star Wars. Aged seven, he was directing playground productions of the opening scenes and had high hopes of one day meeting Princess Leia. He is still waiting for that particular opportunity. For many years now, he has worked as a projectionist at the Soho Screening Rooms (previously Mr Young's), where he observes with great interest the visual development of productions, from rushes through to the finished work. He is always keen to discuss cinema’s many facets and feels honoured to have been invited to sit on this year’s jury. 

Actor / Director / Writer

Peter Mullan began his film career as an actor, appearing in films such as Riff-Raff, Braveheart, Trainspotting and My Name is Joe, directed by Ken Loach, for which he won Best Actor at Cannes Film Festival in 1998. He went on to appear in Miss Julie, receiving his second BIFA nomination for Best Actor. Peter is also an award winning writer and director. His films include Orphans and The Magdalene Sisters, for which won the European Union Media Prize, the ALFS award for Best British Director and the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for, amongst others, a Cesar award, the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film at the BAFTAs and the Best Screenplay BAFTA. 

Film Marketing Consultant

Robert Mitchell has recently left the position of Managing Director of Walt Disney Pictures to set up a marketing consultancy with his business partner Jonathan Donovan. Having started as a runner, Mitchell worked his way up the advertising industry before moving to Warner Bros. as Head of Marketing. Finding himself hooked by the business he moved on to Palace Pictures as Deputy Managing Director and set up Buena Vista International with Daniel Battsek. He has executive produced 3 award winning films and won an educational BAFTA for his marketing campaign on King Arthur.  

Director

After graduating from the NFTS, Sarah Gavron began her career in documentaries. In 2003 she directed her first full-length drama, This Little Life, for which she won the Dennis Potter Award, two BAFTAs (Best Writer and Best New Director), three RTS awards, and the WIFTV Award for Best Newcomer. Her debut feature film, Brick Lane, was met with equally high acclaim, winning her BIFA and BAFTA nominations for Best Director in 2007, and the Alfred Dunhill Award for UK Film Talent at the London Film Festival. She was also selected as one of Variety’s ten directors to watch at the Sundance International Film Festival. Sarah is currently developing future feature projects with the UK Film Council and Film4.
 

Actress

Jodie Whittaker graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2005, winning the Gold Medal for Acting. She has since co-starred alongside acting veterans such as Leslie Philips in Venus and Viggo Mortensen in Good, and has appeared in a number of acclaimed television series’, including Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Wired. Her theatre credits include Ampelisca in The Storm, and Hennie in Awake and Sing. Jodie’s success is set to continue into 2010 with a number of projects set for release, including Nick Moran’s The Kid. 

Producer

Anita Overland began her career producing commercials and music videos for director Gerard de Thame before moving into line producing on films. The first short film she produced, Syrup, won the Cannes Film Festival Jury prize and was nominated for an Oscar. Her other credits include The Tribe for Stephen Poliakoff, the TV series The Book Group for director Annie Griffin and In This World for Andrew Eaton & Michael Winterbottom, which won the Special Achievement prize at the BIFAS & Best Film in a foreign language at the BAFTAS. Anita has also worked as a Co-Producer on A Mighty Heart, A Cock and Bull Story and The Young Victoria. Most recently, Anita produced the Red Riding Trilogy for Revolution Films.
