The Douglas Hickox Award

The British Independent Film Awards is proud to offer an Award in honour of Douglas Hickox, one of Britiain's leading directors throughout the 1970s.

Douglas worked extensively as an assistant director and second unit director throughout the 50s and early 60's, making his first major picture in 1970.

Over the next ten years, he developed a reputation for the wit and style of his direction, and for his taut action sequences.

Douglas died in 1988. He is remembered particularly for the witty Grand Guignol of Theatre of Blood, Brannigan, and the epic Zulu Dawn.

The British Independent Film Awards is especially grateful to his widow, Annabel, who approached our founding sponsor, Raindance, in 1998 with an annual bequest from Douglas' estate.  In addition the Simkins law firm, who advised Douglas, support the winning film-maker by offerring some legal advice free of charge.

This bequest led directly to the creation of the British Independent Film Awards.

In recognition of Douglas's commitment and support for new talent, we inaugurated the Douglas Hickox Award, which is given to a British director on their debut feature.
